28 - Friday, December 19, 1986 - North Shore News Entertainment —_ nosts verdi ORGANIZERS ARE today un- packing about 60 verdite sculptures that will be shown in Canada for the first time from Dec. 21-23 at the International Plaza Hotel. Organizer Stuart Brazier ex- plained the sculptures of verdite -- an extremely hard green stone found only in certain parts of Africa --- come in all sizes. “‘There’s one that is five feet high and weighs 150 kilograms,”’ he said. Found only in Zimbabwe and Zambia, the semi-precious stone is very difficult to carve, its hardness requiring great skill for the sculptor to master. Historically, African art has not included carving. The tribal lifestyle, he explained, was a communal way of living — everything done by the whole group. “Because of the tribal inclina- tion carving was a no-no,”’ Brazier explained. “In that part of the world carv- ing is not popular — it’s very an- tisocial.”’ But in recent years, the gov- ernment of Zimbabwe has en- couraged sculptures with the cre- ation of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, where the works were shown. When the gallery opened, there was almost no indigenous art in Zimbabwe. At first, the - pieces were carved in wood, then in soapstone and then later in the harder native materials such as the - stones verdite, serpentine and steatite. Brazier puts sculpture into two categories — tourist junk and real art. The International Plaza Hotel exhibition, he said, features the real art — all of the pieces have been shown in the National Gallery and around the world. The weighty. exhibit is being flown from Zimbabwe's capital ci- ty of Harare to Amsterdam and then on to North Vancouver fcr a show before going to Texas. Each of the works, in what is called the green stone of Africa, has a fitting African theme. Artists have captured their country in their sculptures. “There's also going to be animals and abstracts,’’ explained Brazier. ‘‘There are elephants and I think there’s going to be a life- sized wart-hog as well. “This is not your typical curio type of junk, this is high-class art,’ said Brazier, who put the prices at $500-$15,000 ‘‘These are EXPO STiy eo WATCHES regular $50.00 WHILE QUANTITIES LAST ALL COLOURS AVAILABLE Scribbles and Giggles Capilano Mail 980-4446 Mietrotown Centre 432-6699 -"A DAZZLER...
