VANCOUVERITE Huck Ciirrord takes on world veterans WEST VANCOUVER'S 80-year-old Hugh Clifford will compete in the 19th World Veterans Road Running Championships scheduled to be run Oct. 4 and § in Richmond. The events comprise an Oct. 4 10-kilometre run and a marathon on the following day. Veteran athletes —- over 40 years for men and 35 for women — are coming from all over the world to compete in the races, which are held in a different country each year under International Amateur Athletic Federation rules. Entries have been received from Australia, Belgium, the People’s Republic of China, Costa Rica, England, France, India, Japan, Lebanon, New Zealand, Scotland, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United States and West Germany as well as the host country. Clifford, who celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this year, has com- peted in 12 marathons since he retired. His best time in the standard 26-mile, 385-yard marathon distance is 4:01:21. Among other scheduled entrants are Bill Stoddart of Scotland who has just established a new world's record in the 55-59 age group in the 10 kilometre of 33:34.7. Greene’s personal best of 2:25:51 would have enabled him to win the 1948 Olympic marathon by nine minutes. : Also in contention will be Pierre Voetz of Belgium, the European marathon champion in the 45-49 age group. Local runners expected to be. prominent at the finish fine are Sverre Heitenan, 66, 2 former world re- cord holder and wel!-known women masters Wendy Robertson and Nan- cy McLaren. Clifford will be facing stiff competition from several European and Japanese runners in the over-80 category, as well as Paul Spangler, an 83 year-old American who holds more age group world records than any other veteran athlete. John Landy, commissioner general of the Australian pavilion at Expo, will be supporting the event. The overseas and American contingent of 300 will be joined by several hundred local runners who, although not necessarily in the elite groups, will heighten the enthusiasm and good fellowship that has been the event’s trademark.
