22 - Wednesday, September 24, 1986 - North Shore News Lions Gate Roadrunners VETERAN INTERNATIONAL marathoner Rod Dixon of New Zealand is coming to B.C. this fall to take part in a series of lectures sponsored by B.C. Athletics and the North Vancouver Liens Gate Road Runners. Dixon, who burst onto the international track scene in 1971, has been described by Runner’s World magazine as ‘‘one of the greatest for the A greatest length of time.” Although he is a veteran of three Olympics, Dixon is probably best : # remembered for his dramatic come-from-behind victory in the prestigious & New York City Marathon in 1983. Running fans will recall the now-famous photograph of Dixon, his eyes closed and arms upraised, savoring the moment, with second-place fin- isher Geoff Smith collapsed behind him at the finish line. Dixon will be in Vancouver Sep. 26 to 27. He will pive !:c: members of the running community and participate in the annual Van- couver Marathon Symposium at Robson Square. On Sept. 28, he will be in Victoria where he will compete in a 10- SRE ETRE sponsor lectures he will be in Kamloops. Dixon, who won the bronze medal in the 1,500 metres at the 1972 Olympic Games and finished fourth in the 5,000 metres distance at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, was ranked among the top 10 in the world at both distances for more than eight years. At one time, he was ranked number one in the world in the 5,000 metre and two mile events. Throughout his career, Dixon has been ranked among the world’s elite cross-country runners. He also set world records in the half-marathon and on the track. Dixon is now establishing a training base in the San Francisco area, where he will continue his intense training program. Off the track, he serves as a sports and special events consultant to Air New Zealand in Canada and the United States. After 15 years, Dixon is still considered a strong contender on the track kilometre road race and give a lecture to local runners.
