Al8 - Wednesday, July 18, 1984 - North Shore News Cree Met with mayor FOUR MEMBERS of the Cypress Park Flood Committee met Mon- day with West Van- couver Mayor Derrick Humphreys requesting that the Cypress Creek channel be cleared in efforts to combat an- ticipated flooding this fall. By JOANNE MacDONALD Among the recommenda- tlons made by Flood Com- mittee Spokesman Hugh Garling was that the municipal government clear the clogged creek channel, since homeowners are restricted from operating mechanical equipment in the creekbed. Garling also suggested, as @ cost-saving measure, thal creek debris be dumped into deep ¥ t close to the creek mouth rafher than transpor- ting it to a further site. The recommendations were made as a result Of the Committee’s fears that dte to the buildup of silt in the creek channel, a heavy run- off could lead to an overflow of the creekbanks with damaging conse- quences. In a press release tssued by the group, the Committee said, ‘‘Appropriate maintenance would be markedly more economical and efficient :f undertaken at this time rather than tackl- ing a flood crisis situation after much damage had been caused ."’ in an interview with the News, Committee member Francis Barthropp said the two floods in 1983 had a traumatic effect on creekside residents “There will) be batter disappointment if the municipality is not prepared to take immediate remedial action,’”’ said Barthropp He acknowledged the group’s appeal 1s) directly related to the recen an nouncement that a” major flood control project with costs projected at $1 2 mil rion — will take place in the Ambleside business district thes summer “What is good for the Ambleside goose is) cqualiy good for the Cypress Park gander ,”’ sard Banthropp The Cypress Park Flood Committee represents about 30 homeowners io the im incdiate arca When contacted by the News, Mayor Humphicyns said a reports currentiy be ing prepared for ¢ ouncil tcgarding the ummedhate and longes term actions newes sary (to. prevent flooding conditions in Cypress C reck He sand C ounct! will prob ably consider the teport within the acat two weeks Humphecys added estimated costs for the flood coatro) measures arc current ty being proyected at $2 mul hon for the “big diversion”’ and $300,000 for the “debris pool ” resi SAVE SAVE *300 *300 *300 399° 499" dents push for relief SAVE Merak ‘‘Caravelle’ Vinta “Solo” Sailboard Vinta 370" Sailboard An excellent all round sadboard for the Stable and fuoyant enough for the beqimner All round Fun Board for (hose who want to recreauonal sadion The Caravelle COompbines yet sleek tines and narrow stern provide break into the funboatd scene ina fast way good stability with ao semi displacement hell advanced manouverability for tne expenenced Features totally retractable daggerboard lexan for upwind performance 5 4 sq meter sanor Features include rotomoulded skeg, fully adjustable mast track 6 Cradstd Sal potyethylene hull retractable daqgerboard nytonvvelcro footstraps and 4a 5 4 sq meter REG. 699.99 adjustable skeq aod EXEL mast Gaastta powerhead sab with 6 O and 6 3 $q REG. 799.99 ® All 1984 Models meter mylar Composites OpUOnal REG. 999.99 @ 100” Guaranteed Jericho Beach, English Bay & Kitsilano PRICESUN ERRFEC T UWiILE ClIANTINES LAST We Reserve Clie ighit bes tenet opt ctitie 6 rrapoe tite toe eo ne reaistere ANC bear reece beds eee Naete cri ey uF eek ae at de ot (owe "tr aw deer ath f 13279 Martne th Panett ang rtbenr ns We Nant ve 980 5781 | Coober pete Arlee we gde ot Brentwood Mail A mages wy Lh er en 299 1481 @ Lessons available through Windsure Windsurfing ® Knowledgeable Staff ©® After Sales Service prot 4600 Ro 3 Ra The Coquitiam toate Bete Centre a .
