B2 - Wednesday, February 1, 1984 - North Shore News COLLEGE BASKETBALL CAP BLUES men’ s basketball team’ went two-for-_ three in éxhibition college action, last week. They lost to Skagit Valley College 91-84 on Wednesday... Mark Marter hit for 38 points and snatched 17 rebounds in a game that could have gone either way. The lead really changed hands between the first and second half. ' Skagit Valley led by 11 at one point in the first, but the Blues pulled to within six at the half (46-40). Cap over- took Valley early in the se- cond and actually led by eight (63-55) before the men from Mt. Vernon pulled even with just over four minutes to play. In the final minutes the Blues got into foul trouble which sent Skagit Valley to the line more often than Capilano would have liked. It was mostly through good success at the foul line in the late going that won it for the it was all North West as they number one junior College team in Washington state. Pino Perovic netted 18 points for Capilano in the game played at Argyle. The loss to Skagit Valley College was followed by two close wins, one on the road, the other in the familiar con- fines of Delbrook’s com- munity gym. Blues travelled to Seattle Friday night to face North West College. Caps won 75-70 thanks to an impressive 32 points, 23 rebounds from Mark Marter, John McEwan scored 16, as did Pino Perovic. In this game the Blues jumped to an early lead, but North West fought back to make it 36-36 at half-time. In the early stages of the second “went ahead by nine. Capilano quickly put a stop to that and overtook the lead themselves by five. The Blues kept that margin for the rest of the game as the teams kept the game on edge by exchanging buckets until the final whistle. Back at Delbrook Saturday night the Blues played a good game against a team that seems to always give them trouble. Capilano defeated UBC’s junior varsity team 90-80 in a contest that never looked certain for the Blues. UBC led 46-40 at the half and then stretched that early in the second to a comman- ding 11-point lead. Capilano clawed itts-way ‘back in front and, in the end, won by 10. It was the fourth time these clubs met this year and, although Capilano has won all four, they’ve all been tough.
