Shore man wins award SHORE resident’ Jim Stimson was honored recently for his role in developing programs to help industrial em- ployees cope suc- cessfully with serious personal problems, including alcohol and drug use. But in his own eyes, the prestigious. [RMA award he received Feb. 25 from the Industrial Relations Management Association of B.C. actually recognizes a remarkable co-operative effort involving labor unions, industry managers and community agencies. “There’s no question that outstanding co-operation between union and management people. -ha been a vital part of our success so far,” says Jim, who is co-ordinator of MacMillan Bloedel'’s - cor- porate employee assistance m. “By putting aside the usual adversary postions, we've been able to work together ‘to solve real human problems that affect people's lives both on and off the job.” The annual IRMA award is presented for outstanding achievement in human relations work. Stimson was nominated for the 1982 honor by both Neil Menard, second vice-president of the International Woodworkers of America Regional Council No.1, and MB president Ray Smith. Stimson launched the MB program three and a half years ago and has developed it in close co-operation with the TWA and the Canadian Paperworkers Union. It is the only joint company- union program of its kind in the Western Canadian forest industry. “Basically, the program is aimed to help employees and their immediate families deal with serious personal difficulties,” he says. “These include marital discord, parent-child conflicts, financial and legal troubles and general ‘mental health’ concerns - such as stress, depression, anxiety, etc. — as well as problems related to the use of alcohol and other drugs.” The services — which include referring troubled employees or family members to outside professional counselling or. treatment — are strictly eonfidential and are provided only when requested. “A company has no business in the private lives of its employees — unless they come to us for help,’ Stimson said. STEWARDS TRAINED The program also trains union stewards and company supervisors to recognize when employees’ personal problems are affecting job and safety performance, and to deal with these situations sensitively. Jim is well aware of the impact of personal problems.
