KEEP VALUABLES ‘GLUED TO YOUR HIDE’

bered another
traveller's aid that is of
great assistance to
backpackers in _par-
ticular.

Foreign hostels can be
dens of thieves but a back-
pack is a cumbersome piece
of equipment to drag along
to the shower. Bring along a
bicycle chain lock and tether
the pack to ‘something big
like a bed or post. Of course
you won't leave anything
valuable in the pack — your
ticekts, money and passport
Should be glued to your hide,
but your equipment itself is
valuable, especially to
someone using war surplus.

If my luggage were an
expensive designer brand
instead of ancient Skyway, I
might be tempted to téther it
whenever I was obliged to
leave it in an unguarded
spot.

Sadly, a bicyle chain is no

deterrent to bicycle thieves
in many parts of the world.
They come equipped with
heavy-duty metal cutters and
“liberate” any bike that takes
their fancy. Bike riders go to
great lengths to try to foil the
crooks. One Dutch girl told
me that she walks two blocks
to her office from where she
tethers her bicyle — right in
freat of the police station.
She also uses FOUR
separate locks and has on
occasion found two or more
cut but the thief was ob-
viously interrupted before he
cut them all.

spotted two bikes hanging.
securely locked, from the
limb of a fair-sized tree. That
takes teamwork!

Quaint little food stands
abound, all over the world.
Often the urge to sample
something overcomes us
when we're sightseeing —
who wants to waste time ina
restaurant? Beware! Health
regulations, if they exist at
all, are often ignored by

Is every clock in your
house electric? Ours are,
except for my elderly travel
alarm. With some of the
windstorms we've been
having lately causing power
outages, better get a
mechanical clock to set if
you have an early morning
flight. The time to think of it
is NOW, not the night before
you have toleave.

Most everywhere we go,
we depend on maps to find
our way = around.
asking directions we often
find that the route is tor-
tuous, especially in ancient
cities. Carry an indelible
yellow felt pen so that your
guide can mark the route
permanently on the map.
Make sure that the ink is
light enough so that you can
sull read the map through
the ink. Kiddies felt pens
won't do — the ink is water
soluble and when you're lost
it’s usually raining.
