Last Christmas, their 13- year old son Darren was involved in a car accident which put him in hospital, in a deep coma. Darren had injured his brain stem, and disrupted the nerve path- ways which carry messages from the brain to muscles. Friends, family and neighbors rallied round to help the Fisher family. They organized themselves to take as much of the burden from Judy and Mel as possible. “They took turns sitting with Darren at the hospital; they exercised his arms and legs to keep the muscles in tone, they talked to him, read to him, tryimg to stimulate a e. When Darren emerged from the coma, be had lost movement function in both his arms and legs. He became a rehabilitation patient at Sunnyhill hospital, and through physiotherapy began to regain some use of his limbs. His balance did not allow him to sit im a regular wheelchair, and the fishers were told Darren needed a special expensive reclining wheelchar. That’s when another good neighbor was able to help. The Kinsmen Rehabilitation Foundation was informed of Darren's need by the hospital. Darren would only need the special reclining chair dunng one stage of his rehabilitation, and would eventually progress to a_ regular wheelchair. Rather than have the Fishers purchase the expensive equipment for the short tme involved, the KRF's Patient Care/Equipment Loans Program was able to meet the need with a recliner, on Joan, for as long as Darren required it. Says Mrs. Fisher “~The support of family. fnends, neighbors and professionals was great. They) really oe Be helped make a difficult time easier.” Using the recliner, Darren is able to be taken out in the community, and to be as active as possible. He still lives at Sunnyhill, where he has daily occupational, physical and speech therapy, and is given school in- structon. He bowls one night a week, and enjoys a teen club there. Darren spends several hours an evening at home with his parents, and is home each weekend. On Sundays, he has horseback-riding therapy with yet another family fnend. Darren is doing well. A regular wheelchair has been ordered, and when it arrives he will no longer need the rechner. It will be returned to the Foundation, to be cleaned, checked over and sent out to the next person who requires it. In the meantime, the therapists of Sunnyhill feel Darren will soon be able to use a communication aid. since he has not yet recovered his speech The KRFE's Technical Aids Department may be abic to help there as well. The Foundation depends on its annual Kinsmen Mothers’ March to raise the money to continue providing its many services to disabled B.C. residents. Several of the Fishers’ friends have contacted the Campaigns Department to volunteer their services in the Deep Cove area during this year’s Now you know Mexico is known as the “storehouse of the world” because of the fertility of its soil and its almost inexhaustible mineral and other natural resources.
