By CHRIS LLOYD Even the best planned fires can go wrong, as these North Vancouver District Firefighters pictured on the right found out Monday. Firemen tackled the blaze from every side of the house but each time they knocked out flames in one spot a fire would break out in another area. And while firemen cut. Tr started off as a routine practice session when they torched an old house slated for demolition on the 1500 block Dovercourt Road in Lynn Valley. But through the sequence of events that were to occur it rapidly degenerated into a comedy of errors. The firemen hosed down the fire, shut down the lines from the hydrants, laid the hoses on the road and began to discuss the technical details of the operation they'd just completed. It was then that an emergency call came in fora fire caused by a welder at Fiberco on the waterfront. One of the two firetrucks sped off to deal with the fire which had set light to a conveyor above. belt, pictured That was when the practice fire flared up again but when the firemen went to hose it down ... they found their hoses had frozen up. A change of nozzles and they were back in action. But by that time they had a full scale roof fire on their hands. away at the structure, other firefighters from the ground sprayed up jets of water which covered them so that pretty soon everyone was dripping wet. Several of the firefighters were wearing dress pants which were wringing wet in the icy weather, while even those with waterproof suits looked sodden. Practicality won out over modesty in the case of a deputy fire chief who was seen standing in the road in his firehat, jacket and a pair of bikini shorts as he changed into a dry pair of pants. Within a few hours every- one was exhausted and they were replaced by a relief crew who finally got the fire out. And even after ali that, Chief Training officer Don Tardiff told the News it had been “a valuable exercise” and that they had “enjoyed it.” And he even warned that as they’d managed to save some of the house they'd probably set fire to it again for a repeat exercise Thursday.
