STEACY HOUSE Highrise incorporates modest Kdwardian home into design THE STEACY House stands proudly as a fine ex- ample of a modest Edwar- dian home. It was built for Albert R. and Francis A. Steacy. NORTH SHORE HERITAGE by Dorothy Foster | Albert Steacy was a grocer and a community leader in the city’s early history. In 1910 he became president of the Conservative Association, and a year later, in the capacity of chairman of the ‘school board, he laid the foundation stone for Ridgeway School. Located near the southwest cor- ner of Lonsdale and Sixth Street, the Steacy House has been reposi- tioned to be an integral part of a new condominium development. Built in 1905, it is one of North Vancouver City’s earliest surviving homes and.was the last remaining single-family residence on Lons- dale below the highway. Rather than being demolished to make way for a highrise, it has been incorporated into a total de- velopment plan. soe It has recently been refurbished and is an.example of what can be done to both preserve heritage and at the same. time accommodate development. - The house will be used for two guest-type areas, or meeting space for condo owners and _ their visitors. tO The architect Fo’ad Rafi designed the highrise next to the house using some of the features - of the house itself. This would include the window treatment up the front, and the « hip-shaped* roof, which isn’t in the illustration above: Bare vy i if Steacy House, 567 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver, built 1905.
