A study into the
number of North
Shore babies born
missing a part of
their arms needs
further analysis.

According to North Shore
Health Region (NSHR), ini-
tial statistical indications show
no unusual trends relating to
limb deformities during the
past ten years, But the study
team believed there were
potential inaccuracies in the
data that require further
investigation.

“What gets reported in
one year may not be reported
the next year,” said NSHR
spokesman Clay Adams.

Adams said the review
team wanted to go over the
numbers and narrow their
study to “significant” abnor-
malities.

In April, health region
officials decided to ceview
information about babies
born at Lions Gate Hospital
(LGH) with documented
limb anomalies.

The review was started
after concerns were raised by
a North Vancouver mother
whose baby was born missing
a hand at LGH in 1999, The
mother, Jackie Coupland,
said she was aware of three
North Shore babies born last
year missing a part of their
arms.

Health region information
indicated that 23 babies were
born fast year at LGH with
congecital limb deformities
compared to 12 cases in 1998
despite 220 fewer births in
1998.

Around 1,500 babies are
born at LGH yearly.

That was the nearly unanimous message deliv-
ered in a packed clubhouse room at Gleneagles Golf
Course, Tuesday night, as 150-200 local residents
voiced their opposition to BC Ferries proposed
expansion of the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal.

“It's up to us... We need a protest,” said John
Moonen, founding director of Citizens Against
Ferry ‘Terminal Expansion (CAFTE) to the some-
times raucous crowd. “What are you willing to do?”

CAFTE, which began with 20 members last year
and now claims a signed membership of 200, is ask-
ing the B.C. Ferry Corp. (BCFC) to halt all expan-
sion plans until there is a comprehensive long-term
plan for the Horseshoe Bay ferry runs and indepen-
dent social, environmental, and economic impact
studies. They also want BC Ferries to agree to com-
ply with local bylaws and to agree to enter into
meaningful consultation with the community.

Many community members, including the West
Vancouver council, the Chamber of Commerce and
the Horseshoe Bay Busisess Association have
expressed strong opposition to BCFC plans to
