When I was an active par- ent volunteer there was an occasion when we were even called “scabs” (North Shore News, front page story, Jan 5, 1983). Another time when par- ents stated they liked sports days for their kids, a principal told us that staff did not like them as it was an opportunity MAIL Box———— ——— + Get rid of elected trustees to compare notes. So resent- ment of parent volunteers is not just about jolys! We can go back to 1976 when an international report of Canadian public education systems found school boards dealing with “fringe” matters rather than the substance of education and learning. “Parents complain that the school boards are remote and take no notice of them.” (OECD Report of Educational Policy in Canada, 1976). Parents and the public have a long history of suffer- ing under our present archaic system of educational gover- nance, It is an industrial. model and completely out of date with modern times, It pro- duces lavers and lavers of obstacles and busy work for the industry, while parents and teachers ace artificially kept from having meaningful relationships. It is the structure that needs to be changed. We need to abolish politi- cally elected school trustees who so-called “govern” over a whole district and have par- ents as unpaid governors of their own individual schools, similar to the structure in pri- vate schools. Eiected trustees are “babes-in-the-woods” when iC comes to dealing with employee groups and unions. They are easily overwhelmed and taken advantage of. How can they keep ahead of the professional advice, persis- tence, and knowledge build- up of the union groups? The benefits of such a change would be immense: accountability, responsive- Ness, cost saving, efficiency, etc, Tunya Audain West Vancouver Reader upset by ‘attacks on women’ Dear Editor: With regards to Wana Mercer's columns which appear in your paper every Friday, I wonder if anyone besides myself is sick and tired of her constant attacks on women? While I do feel pity for someone such as Ms. Mercer, who obviously has a lot of inner conflict and pain regarding her femininity, nevertheless I feel her col- umn serves no useful purpose and is an insult to all women who have ever been or are presently struggling with circum- stances presented to them merely because they are female. Ms. Mercer, without a shred of compassion or insight, condemns the women of Pakistan who would “gossip” or con- tribuce to the persecution or “honour killings” of their fellow women in that country. In fact, in any oppressive situa- tion, the people with the least power, do tend to turn on their peers. I am think- ing here | of the “stool pigeon” in prison, the “rat” in a gang, the playground “tat- tletale,” even the school yard bully. Those Pakistan wemen, it seems to me, are pathetically taking whatever power they can and turning against their sis- ters, not because they are so spiteful but because that is probably the only safe way for them to express some of their own frustration of their own terrible cir- cumstances. It seems to me that these women do not have an opportunity to protest their living conditions or the politics of their country, therefore they project their fears and anger on those Earn TRIP LE AIR MILES® reward miles on Goodyear and Dunlop tires for your car, pickup, minivan or SUV. pius TRIPLE AIR MAILES® on all Mechanical Service Purchases but only from June 1 - 36, 2000! I sin- cerely hope Ms. Mercer will seek some help to discover why it is that she must spew forth so much hatred and anger at women on such a_ regular basis. Personally, I am weary of feeling attacked every time I pick up a Friday edition of the North Shore News. In fact, [ question the motives of putting such useless diatribe in your paper. Ms. Mercer’s column does not inform but rather insults and demeans the female percentage of your reader- shi 7 hope you will consider the points I have mentioned and consider dropping Ms. Mercer’s column from your paper.
