Al4 - Wednesday, December 2, 1981 - North Shore News Renters’ group tells Socreds TENANTS group leaders Richard Blackburn and Greg Richmond, freshly rejected at the polls in their bid for seats’ as aldermen on North Vancouver City council, are now turning their attention to the provincial political scene. The two founders of the North Shore Tenants’ Association have declared that “a state of war exists between tenants Social Credit Government.” They have invited all B.C. renters to join them as their “War Cabinet” launches its “Vote For Anything But Social Credit Campaign.” They maintain they are responding to a war which they say is already being weeed by landlords against tenants, some of whom have increased rents by as much as 84 per cent. “,ae landlords of B.C. have, through their government, declared fina::cial war on tenants and now Peter Hyndman has his $7U %00 a year civil servant, the Rentalsman, doing a propaganda campaign stating ‘all will be rosy next year’,” a press release states. It continues: “ ‘Not so, say the tenants. Rent controls are almost finished, rent review was designed by Hyndman to baffle renters, and new construction which was supposed to be inhibited by rent controls is far from being affordable. Or competitive.” Tenants Association President Richard Black- burn says the sole objective of himself and his supporters is to organize renters to vote against Social Credit in the next election, as a response to threats of eviction, intimidation, denial of tenant rights and lack of maintenance and repairs. and the 7 RICHARD BLACK- BURN (left) and GREG RICHMOND His group is urging all tenants to put “Vote For Anything But Social Credit” Signs in their windows and on their balconies. LINES DRAWN “The battle lines are drawn and it’s war between tenants and the Social Credit Government,” he says. Blackburn urges tenants to support provincial candidates who support their demands of rent control, security of tenure, 4 tenants’ bill of rights, the rewriting of the Residential Tenancy Act and provincial government involvement in the con- struction of affordable rental housing. Greg Richmond, who is vice president of the North Shore Tenants Association, announces a 12-point “War Strategy.” Richmond says. the association will: , 1. Continue to assist tenants to organize; 2. Continue to hold meetings to advise tenants of their rights; 3. Carry its message to any group wishing to hear it; 4. Seek out and “train” willing volunteers; 5. Challenge all political parties on their relating to renters; 6. Continue to lobby all levels of government for financial support for renters’ aid offices; 7. Defend tenants who have “just” disputes; 8. Advise landlords of their rights and obligations; 9. Publicize the names of landiords who abuse tenants; 10. Shut down the Office of the Rentalsman so it can no longer “rubber stamp” landlords’ applications. 11. Stop advising tenant groups against rent strikes; 12. Invite the support of native people fighting for Constitutional reform, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, home-owner groups who want education costs shifted from policies residential property, and ‘‘all other’ British Columbians who need legislative change.” Become a Friend of BC's Childrens Hospital.
