The North Shore depot site was not con- firmed to press time. But this month, cight of 35 industry-operatcd collec- tion depots in the province were opened. All of the planned depots are expected to open this year, according to the Environment, Lands and Parks Ministry. ~ The depots accept tur- pentine, paint thinners, lac- qucrs, polishes, paint strip- pers, varsol, camp fuels, gasoline and a wide range of houschold pesticides. The nearest depor to the North Shore right now is located at the East Vancouver bottle depot, 2605 Kaslo Street. The other collection depots opened this month are located in Port Coquitlam, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey, Richmond and the Victoria area. To fund the depots, an “eco-fee” has been added to the cost of solvents, pesti- cides and flammabic liquids. The fee went into effect on Jan. 1, The fee is 40 cents per litre of solvent or flamma- ble liquid and 60 cents per litre of pesticide. The fee must clearly be shown on sale receipts, according to the Environment, Lands and Parks Ministry. According to the govern- ment, paint thinners and pes- ticides have been dumped down the drains or sent to landfills harming the environ- ment and fish habitar. For more information about the hazardous waste depots , call the industry- operated Consumer Product Stewardship Hotline at 878- 8700.
