James Aitken graduated from the University of British Columbia and earned an MBA from the University of Washington. Macdonald said Mr. Aitken then moved on to a teaching career at the University of Illinois (where he bought a car that was once owned by Ali Capone) and Queens University in Kingston. At Queens, his job became a victim of the 1929 crash. After he was let go, he vowed he would never work for anyone again. “He never did,” Macdonald. Mr. Aitken returned to Vancouver in !932 and started the Aitken Tug and Barge Company with his brother Sterling, who died a few years ago. After that the brothers also ran said (Like my poetry? Although Mr. Aitken said he had not eaten in a restaurant for 40 years prior to his death, he gave away about $100,000 a year for many years, said Macdonald. He said Mr. Aitken, who had bladder cancer, died of respiratory failure.
