52 - Friday, August 26, 1994 - North Shore News SCENE HL) POTEET) SATE EO all-new sedans THE 1995 Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique five-passenger “world cars” will be priced up to $4,000 less than compurably equipped competitors, Ford of Canada announced today. The two all-new sedans will be introduced Sept. 29. The Ford Contour will be available in three series. Contour Gi. will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $16,895; Contour LX will have a MSRP of $17,795: the sporty Contour SE will retail for $19,795. (All prices are in Canadian dollars) Retail prices for the Mercury Mystique GS will be $17,295, while the Mercury Mystique LS will have a MSRP of $18,995. Contour and Mystique have dis- tinctive personalities with unique exterior and interior styling. Mystique includes more standard features than Contour, such as a tachometer, split fold-down rear seat and full-length console. The 1995 Ford Contour is priced about $1,900 below a comparably equipped 1994 Nissan Altima GXE; $4,000 below a 1994 Mazda 626; and $1,100 below a 1994 ‘Honda Accord. None of those competitive cars offers such tech- nologically advanced equipment as an optional all-speed electronic traction control. Both Contour and Mystique also feature a standard three-stage passenger compartment filtration system that traps dust and pollen particles as small as three microns —about one-twentieth the diameter of a human hair. Previously, such a filtration system had been available only on a few high-end European sedans. “These all-new cars will rede- fine the Canadian rnarket for mid- size sedans,” said Mark Hutchins, president and CEO of Ford of Canada. “With so many best-in- class and first-in-class features, Contour and Mystique represent .qoutstanding value, and their superi- oe ; “_ or driving dynamics really separate them from the competition. We're also confident that their quality will be best-in-class.” Advanee orders for the new cars have been very strong. Mr. Hutchins said. “We already have 6,000 dealer orders (wo months before the cars go on sale, which represents Ford of Canada’s alloca- tion through the first three months of production.” The Ford Mondeo. the European sibling of Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, was muned the 1994 European Car of the Year. Ford has sold more than half a mil- lion Mondeos and initial custonier satisfaction has’been the highest of any European vehicle Ford has ever launched. The standard 2.0-litre DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder Zetec engine features an all-aluminum cylinder head and delivers out- standing performance and fuel economy. The optional 2.5-litre DOHC 24-valve Duratec V6 engine does not need a tune-up for 160,000 km. The Duratec engine features an aluminum head and block cast at the Windsor, Ontario, siuminum plant: part of Ford’s $3 billion investment in Canada in recent years. The casting process used at the Windsor Plant was developed by Cosworth for Formula | racing engines to provide greater strength and quality with lighter weight. A dual airbag supplemental restraint system is standard on both contour and Mystique. Included in the state-of-the-art technology built into both vehicles are dynamic safety features such as “anti-sub- marine” seats and boron steel side impact beams which meet 1997 safety standards. Anti-lock brakes and all-speed traction control also ure offered on both Mystique and Contour.
