filled with Socred party faithful
who had come to sip wine, nibble
cheese and applaud their new
leader.

She offered them ample oppor-
tunity. .

“We're going to get rid of the
NDP in Victoria,’’ she told her
cheering audience. ‘‘That is our
mission.”’ ;

McCarthy has vowed to double
party membership from about
§0,000 to 100,000 by 1994. That
would be a great accomplishment
in light of the stunning defeat the
party was dealt in the 1991 elec-
tion. |

But McCarthy refused to allow
any room for doubt.

“Tam sure. we will, reach our
goal,”’ she said firmiy during an
interview. ‘‘We are bringing the
circle back together again.” . ~

Large-scale membership drives
are not new to McCarthy. In 1972
she toured the province during the
aftermath of the Socred loss to the
NDP.

Juined by former cabinet
minister Dan Campbell and
W.A.C. Bennett, she managed to
drum up 32,000. new members in
just {wo years.
