Should marijuana possession be decriminalized?

The spectre of marijuana
decriminalization has once
again risen.

This most recent cry is a result
of two candidates for Brian
Mutronay’s job admitting they
have smoked pot.

MP Jim Fulton (NDP-Skeena)
contends that since two Tory
leadership wanna-bes have
admitted to smaking pot (no
mention of inhaling), the federal
government should legalize the
herb and erase the criminal
records of those citizens who
have been busted.

team began calling North Shore

residents last Monday to find out

where readers stand on the

proposed decriminalization of

marijuana. .
The final polling found that 56.7% North Shore residents are notin;
favor of decriminalization. Those approving of such a move by the
federal courts {o make possession a tighter crime represented
21.2% of the raspondents. ots

Tha remaining opinions polled were of no opinion (4. 7%) and. of no
knowledge of the issue (13.5%).

Our survey team polls opinion in-15 zones on the North Shore.
While none of these zones represented a majority in favor of
decriminalization, Deep Cove was an even §0/50 split. The next
closest zone was Lynn Valley, where 59% were opposed to
decriminalization, and 38% In favor of it.

The most resounding no vote came from Horsestioe Bay, where
84.2% were opposed, 10.1% tn favor.
