SPORTS Canada fields strong team at world amateur golf meet THE WORLD’S best men amateur golfers from over 50 countries begin play tomorrow at the Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vanccuver in national team play at the 1992 World Amateur Golf Team Championships. The championships take place every two years and are hosted ia the Western Hemisphere only once every six years. Given the international rotata- tion, it will be many years before Canada will again have the privi- lege to host the world’s best ama- teur, and tomorrow’s profes- sional, golfers. The Canadian team consists of Michael Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., Todd Fanning of Winnipeg, Graham Cooke of Montreal and Darren Richie of Hampton, N.B. Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver is the alternate member of the team and is acting deputy captain. Hugh Hallward, president of the Royal Canadian Golf Assecia- tion, is the non-playing captain of the team. The team was chosen at the conclusion of the Canadian Ama- By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter teur Golf Championships held in St. John, New Brunswick. Richie won the world qualifier with a low score of 282, with Weir second, Fanning third and Cooke fourth. “It was a difficult task to pick four players out of the many fine amateur golfers in this country,”’ said Hallward. ‘‘But we feel we have a strong team, with every -member peaking at the right time.”’ All four players compete daily with the top three scores counting. Practice at the Capilano course, a sure challenge for the werld’s best amatuers, concludes today, with the first round of. the cham- pionship teeing-off tomorrow. “‘More than 50 countries will be sending teams to Vancouver, mak- ing this edition of the world ama- teur by far the largest in history,”’ said Royal Canadian Golf Association executive director Stephen Ross. “We have faced some signifi- cant logistical challenges but with the co-operation of Marine Drive Golf Club and Capilano those have now been resolved.’’ The Marine Drive course hosted the women’s world championships that ended on Sunday. Spain’s three-member team beat out Great Britain-Ireland by a stroke to win Spain’s second Espirito Santo Trophy, the world championship award. Ross attributed the record amount of entries (53) on the men’s side to a combination of the locale and the anticipation that golf will be accepted for in- clusion in the 1996 Olympics. The previous high was 39 countries fielding teams. Wednesday, September 20, 1992 - North Shore News ~ 18 TURFE'S UP?
