Role playing troupe
targets youth issues

TEENS with an interest in
mental health and in acting
might be interested in join-
ing the Mental Health
Players.

The Mental Health Players is
an exciting group of committed
volunteers who take on different
characters to convey sensitive
issues to the community through
role-playing. The role plays are
designed to create a non-threaten-
ing atsmophere for the atdience
to explore thoughts, attitudes and
feelings.

Some of the issues presented to
various groups include stress,
divorce, dropping-out and resi-
dential group homes. Since they
began in 1991, the Mental Heaith

dogs and cats is culturally (ap-

Players have performed over 25
role plays to over 800 audience
participants.

At present, the players are de-
veloping role plays on issues con-
cerning youth, These plays will be
presented in North Shore high
schools in the fall. Teens between
the ages of 13 to 16 are encourag-
ed to become a member of this
dynamic team. Team members
gain work experince, school cred-
it. have lots of fun and meet new
people.

No experience is necessary and
a full training workshop will be
provided.

prefer to sling more mud, or as |
like to say, pile it higher and
deeper.

But I do appreciate the support
of all those who supported our
stand, and with all the support I
had, it cannot really be just my
stand. It is our stand.

But | would like to draw on
something that most people said,
tegardless of their position, that
they wanted to do whatever they
could to make Canada the best it
could possibly be.

An individual is not the gov-
ernment, and thus, any economic
plans or constitutional modifica-
tions really mean nothing. The
only way that the average Cana-
dian can make a difference and
Strengthen Canada is by

strengthening the bonds between
the people of the nation. Nations
where the people are united and
believe in one another will, 1
think, always be better off than
nations whose people are
fragmented.

This is especially true in
Canada. The people of this nation
are so diverse in race, color, creed
and heritage that sometimes a
great hatred develops among the
different groups. This must not be
the case. Every group, be they of
the majority or minority, must
endeavor to learn about the
heritage and beliefs of other
groups rather than feeling separate
from them. If this learning pro-
cess happens, people of all groups
can understand the way their
fellow Canadians think.

By learning about one another

we create mutual respect and will
be more tolerant of one another.
This tolerance will breed and
cultivate new relationships, trust
and understanding.

We must not let our differences
divide us. Certainly, all people are
different, but this must be a
strength for our nation, not a
weakness. If we accept one
another, if we can create a com-
mon unity from our diversity,
then and only then can we begin
to solve all the other, and, in fact,
lesser problems that plague our
country.

If, however, we cannot learn to
accept one another, the conse-
quences that we will have to face
will not be pleasant, and we will
find ourselves eye to eye with a
grim, and very ominous future.
