phato submitted ROCKER Art Beramann has just released his self-titled new album on Polydor. Viusical roulette Art Bergmann is back with his third strong recording in as many years RT BERGMANN issues forth invective from the dan- gerous side of rock ‘rn’ roll. Since the Hawaiian days of the Young Canadians, Bergrnann has put the boots to the societal Common ground. When he's bugged, his sharp Syrical vi- gnettes poke at the compromised cultural underpinnings, the totter- ing sticks built upon a mushy morass of debasement and crass sentiment. Dark insight is sheathed in a maelstrom of cascading, ragged power chords. When the creative coin is flip- ped, Bergmann puts out glorious, persisting pop melody. Faithlessty Yours, the first single from his PolyGrarm debut Art Bergmann, is such a song. The past three years have seen the release of three Bergmann re- cordings, Crawl With Me (1988), Sexual Roulette (1990) — both on Duke Street Records, and Art Bergmann (1991) on the PolyGram label. Critical claim has come in spades. Commercial success has been a bit more elusive. Music Now recently talked to Bergmann. Music Now: Sexual Roulette was a strong release. Why wasn” it the great Michael! Becker RECORD REVIEW breakthrough? Bergmann: “Duke Street was go- ing down the tubes. They decided to release it. It was totally lost. It was like it wasn’t even released. If you wanted to buy it you couldn't even buy — no support, no tim- ing, no label.” Music Now: Your band the Showdogs didn’t show on the latest release. Have you parted company? Bergmann: ‘We broke up. We were in the middle of going nowhere and jus! decided to break it up. i didn’t want to drag along people when there was nothing happening. We had just got out of our deal with Duke Street and it was just like hell,” &é/ always try to write great pop songs. If radio was like it was in 1965 I wouldn't have a probiem. #9 - Art Beramann Music Now: ‘’You are quoted in a press release saying this: ‘Vm not angry. i'm savagely disappointed.’ What's bugging you these days? Bergmann: ‘What bugs me most is the non-culture of our society, It's a vacuum — just ram- pant consumerism and overstimulation of the kids, it’s just no content, nothing, no spiritualism — yuck!" Music Now: ¥Yhat does the deal with PolyGram give you See Beramann pase 3F Peppi's Winter Program Starting Sept.
