AGASSIZ’S MINTER Gardens was the spectacular setting for the launch of the first annual Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and Queen of Heart’s Invitational Charity Croquet Tournament on Aug. 18. Joy Nietcalfe JOY TELLS ALL The proceeds from this first- ever event were donated to the Mel Jr. and Marty Zajac Memo- rial Foundation in support of the Upper Fraser Valley Neurological Society and the Vancouver Neurological Centre. The gala fundraiser was or- chestrated and emceed by North Shore News columnist and radio open-liner Gary Bannerman with the dashing and witty Senator Ed Lawson as honorary chairman. Entertainment was provided by the Chilliwack Players Guild with stirring music by the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Pipe Band. Special guests were Van- couver businessman and Bob Hope's best friend, Mel Zajac, and former Lt.-Gov. Henry Bell- Irving. Despite the extreme heat, everyone came in costume. The gourmet repast with tea and ele- gant desserts was a very reason- able $5. Mel and Gary were both so pleased with the affair that they’re already planning next summer’s tournament... Speaking of croquet tourneys, there is another one taking place out at . Hart House in Burnaby on Fri- day, Sept. 13. What an auspicious date! Just prior to taking some time off from my column and my ’NW radio show, I enjoyed a magnifi- cent repast on board P&O Princess Cruises’ sleek Pacific Princess. Gracious as always, our hosts were Miller and Leonard’s Dean Miller and his wife, Jean, of West Van. Dean is fondly regarded by the industry as the Dean of P.R. He’s also very fondly regarded by the Rotary Club of Vancouver for his volunteer efforts over the past 20-odd years and for his talents at ‘the piano. They recently presented him with the prestigious Paul Harris Award, an award recognized worldwide and named after the founder of Rotary... On that same note, Capilano waterfront resident and active publicist Mary Snowbail reports to me that popu- lar hotelier and new North Shore resident Hermann Shaad, the gen- eral manager of the Sheraton Inn Plaza 500, has also just been named a recipient of the coveted Paul Harris Award from the newly-formed Rotary Club of Vancouver Quadra for his assistance over the past 13 years, including his year as president of the Burnaby chapter in 1987-88. Congratulations to both these outstanding gentlemen!... The other fun thing | enjoyed during my time off was to revisis the Phantom at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. And I must say that J was every bit as impressed as ! was the first time | saw Phantom of the Opera with Jeff Hystop and Patti Cohenour as | was last Tuesday night. The block-buster musical just seems to get better with age. And, of course, the good news is that Patti Cohenour, who suf- fered a back injury several weeks ago, is finally back on stage tak- ing well-deserved bows... Interest- ing, 00, is that, at several of the weddings I have attended recently, including that of PR lady Nina Rhodes, we’ve heard the delightful and romantic strains of That's Ail MEL ZAJAC... already planning next year’s charity tournament. Something I didn’t get a chance to do yet but will shortly, is to take a dream trip on the Great Rocky Mountaineer Railtours, with office headquarters in North Vancouver. This is the train trip which runs between Vancouver and Banff and Calgary, and Van- couver and Jasper. Peter Armstrong's thriving train tour company now has instituted rates for seniors. You may recall that the Great Rocky Mountaineer was recently voted as one of the best rail experiences worldwide... Just spotted Peter and his wife relaxing and enjoying the new menu at Klaus Fuerness' revamped restaurant, Peppi’s... Speaking of dining, something else T enjoyed during my brief holiday was a dinner at the Keg Boathouse in Horseshoe Bay. The setting is so lovely, the service by our waiter, George, was first-class, and the baby coho and filet couldn’t have been tastier. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been to the Boathouse and I found the whole atmosphere and the menu vastly improved. The cheerful at- titude of manager Andrew Dale is an added plus... Small disap- poiniment at Earl’s on Marine Drive is that they have dispensed with their super spinach salad, but they do serve a tasty and simple salmon with dill yogurt sauce... Despite my absence, super rocker Bryan Adams has continued at the top of the charts with his Everything I Do, the song from Robin Hood... Don’t forget that tomorrow _ is your last chance to see the Vancouver Museum’s Panache, a fabulous collection of fashions over the past 200 years... Cheers!
