12 - Friday, November 30. 1990 — North Shore News West Van Highlanders take B.C. high school football trophy THE GHOST OF the 1990 Grey Cup still haunts che cav- ernous confines of B.C. Place Stadium. Or so it seemed Wednesday night when the West Vancouver Highlanders won their first 8.C. single A high school football championship 37-7 over the Bur- naby Central Wildcats. Faded CFL and Grey Cup logos on the artificial turf were a reminder of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ surprisingly lopsided 50-11 defeat of the Edmonton Eskimos in this year’s Grey Cup. And just like the CFL champi- onship, empty seats were plentiful and the anticipated classic mat- chup became an exhibition of of- fensive force and defensive inep- titude. Perhaps the Highlanders were destined to win the game: they occupied the dressing room which only days earlier was the site of the Bombers* victory celebration. “For us it was the single A Grey Cup,”" said West Van head coach Gary Schwertfeger. **Win- nipeg used this dressing room and got lucky. Maybe this is special ... maybe the Lions ought to make this the home dressing room.”’ The championship is Schwert- feger's first in a 16-year career with West Van, although he came close 12 years ago. He guided the Highlanders to their only previous championship appearance in 1978 — a heartbreaking 9-6 double overtime loss to Notre Dame. Gavin Murgatroyd, selected the outstanding running back in Wednesday night’s final, picked up where he left off in the semi- final with an 11-yard touchdown run two minutes into the game. He bruised his ribs on the opening By Bob Mackin Jr. Contributing Writer drive but remained in the game to compile a painful 83 yards rushing on 26 carries. “He came off holding himself and he couldn't breathe,’’ Schwertfeger said. “‘He said he didn’t want to come out of the game. He gave a very gully per- formance." Schwerifeger was confident Murgatroyd's injury wouldn't jeopardize his team’s chances. “There was no one hero. Peo- ple say Gavin is a great athlete — and he is — but we came together as a (eam. “This isn't a one-person team. We had five individuals who we relied upon heavily."’ One of them was championship MVP Rick Strong. The safety/defensive back/ kicker/punter had 13 points in the game, including a 28-yard field goal and an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown. **He had no responsibilities on (the interception),’’ Schwertfeger said, ‘‘so when the quarterback was being sacked he read that and came over, and was in a beautiful position to catch the ball. And away he went!"’ West Vancouver’s QB David Wright completed six of 15 at- tempts for 108 yards passing. His only TD toss was a 3!-yarder to Mike Enns in the second quarter. Rob Grey finished West Van’s scoring when he rushed 32 yards for a fourth quarter TD. FINAL. Wildcats’ QK Deve Robertson, who was a dismai one for I4 for 20 yards, pitched tte ball to ELT. Marcello near midfield. The rinn- ing back threw a 43-yard rainbow into the arms of Vie Bryan. But i: was too late for a comeback. Alex Reid. Burnaby Central head coach, wished his team could have used the spectacular play to win the game, rather than merely prevent a shutout. “Its in our playbook and we haven't thrown it all year,’ he said. “It's too bad we had to use it in desperation te try to get some points."° In Schwertfeger’s opinion, West Van's option to play single A this year after competing among the ranks of AA for more than a de- cade shouldn't diminish his team’s achievement. Especially since many teams in both leagues have rosters of 40 players, while West Van has 26. “Single A or AA has nothing to do with the ability of players or a team's calibre. It has to do with school enrolment. coaching availability and other ivgistics. “As Eve said, [ don't care if it’s A, B, C, D or E. The boys worked hard and they deserved it."
