Driver training benefits old and young alike

SOME VEHICLES, such as
four-wheel-drive vehicles,
high performance cars, and
motorhomes require special
driving skills in order to
operate them safely on
public roads.

Yet, under present
Department of Motor Vehi-
cles regulations, anyone with
a standard Class 5 driver’s
licence and the financial
means can legaily drive any
one of these vehicles without
any special driver training.

Young, inexperienced
drivers can step into a 300
horsepower muscle car the
day after they pass the basic
around-town driver’s test
and written exam and head
out on the highway with a
lot of enthusiasm and very
little experience.

Ma and Pa Holidaymaker
can hook up a travel trailer
weighing under 4,600
kilograms and tow their way
around the continent
without any special driving
skills.

Government driving tests
evaluate everyday driving
skills and knowledge, but
they do not evaluate special
skills such as backing up a
trailer or emergency driving
procedures such as panic
braking, accident avoidance,

While it is true that
emergency driving skills are
used very rarely, they pay
off in a big way when they
are really needed.

A number of car com-
panies have taken it upon
themselves to offer special
driving courses to owners of
their particular brand of
cars, notably Porsche and
Nissan,

Nissan’s driving courses
are offered free of charge to
owners of the Nissan 300ZX
sports car, provided it is
taken within a year of pur-
chase. Courses are also of-
fered, for a fee, to others
who want to improve their
driving skills.

Nissan recently brought its
School of Performance
Driving to the West Coast
from its home base at Shan-
nonville Motorsports Park
near Belleville, Ontario.

Max Wickens, head of
public relations for Nissan,
came up with the idea of of-
fering driving courses to
Nissan buyers.

to me and told me they felt
somewhat awed, perhaps
afraid of the performance
potential of the 300ZX.

Nissan’s intensive course
involves about 50 per cent
classroom education and 50
per cent on-track driving.

Classroom sessions begin
with the basics, such as how
to hold the steering wheel
properly and the best seating
position for maximum con-
trol. Goodman explains why
a car behaves the way it does
when cornering, braking and
accelerating, and what is the
best way to control the car in
any given situation.

Then it’s time to put those
theories into practice. On-
track driving includes brak-
ing from 80 kilometres per
hour in a controlled panic
stop without locking up the
brakes, last-minute braking
and steering around an ab-
ject to avoid hitting it, and
weaving through a set of
cones.

Other driving skills are
taught, such as skid control
on a wet skidpad, and
double-clutch shifting to
save transmission and clutch
wears.

Goodman doesn’t think
driving courses should be
restricted to owners of per-
formance cars, though.

While required driving
courses may not be the only
answer to reducing the
number of accidents on our
highways, they would pro-
vide drivers with valuable
skills and an improved at-
titude to the responsibility of
driving.
