2 - Friday, February 16, 1990 — North Shore News Squamish elder dies at age 97 THE SQUAMISH Nation lost one of its most highly respected elders Saturday with the death of hereditary Chief Louis Miranda. He was 97. Squamish Chief Philip Joe said Tuesday Mr. Miranda, Chief Joe's great-uncle, helped ensure the survival of the Squamish language and was one of the last living members of the Squamish Band who had direct contact with band with European civilization. Mr. Miranda, who was born in 1892 and served as a chief of the Squamish band for close to 50 years, was a major curato: of the Squamish language and culture. “He was one of our most respected elders,’’ Chief Joe said. “He wrote the Squamisii language. He knew every ancestral name. He knew all the legends. He taught the language and he taught the lan- guage to the teachers who are teaching our language in schools today.’’ Mr. Miranda received an honor- ary doctorate from Simon Fraser University in 1981 in recognition of his work on the two-volume Squamish Language study, which was published in the late 1960s. He also dedicated 60 vears of service to the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Miranda is survived by his wife Jessie, to whom he was mar- tied for 63 years, and his son Frank.
