Production numbers * add life to Beaches + Beaches **'4 (Touchstone) Rated M (at the Vancouver Centre, Rich- mond Square, Park Royal, Station Scuare, Guildford and Willowbrook 6) ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Cc Bloorn (Mayim Bialik) is in Atlantic City (under the boardwalk, to be precise) sneaking a smoke when she meets Hillary Whitney (Marcie Leeds), a very rich and very lost little girl. It’s the beginning of a true friendship. Hillary is in awe of CC. The feel- ing is mutual. CC is in awe of CC, too. And why not? The kid can sing up a storm and with CC’s mom in charge, Leona (Lainie Kazan) — a stage mother that puts Terri Shields to shame — there's no question that CC is heading places. But right now, she’s head- ed back to the Bronx while Hillary departs for her home in San Fran- cisco. The two women grow up in their separate worlds but a steady stream of letters keen them linked to each other for over a decade. | Feeling suffocated in her con- ventional lifestyle, Hillary (now played by Barbara Hershey) arrives “AFFOR TIM BELL film reviewer unannounced at a New York City dive where CC (Bette Midler) is performing. Despite being total opposites, CC and Hillary share the rent, facials and marathon gin games. Their cosy life is interrupted by CC's showbiz break at a successful avant-garde theatre. The at- mosphere in their tiny apartment becomes frigid when both fall for the little theatre's director, John Pearce (John Heard). As the green eyes flash, the melodrama threatens to drown the film’s strengths. Simple scenes like Hillary coaxing the Jewish CC to sing Christmas carols with her or CC tending her roommate's plants, are replaced by soap opera. To break up the usual fare of crumbling marriages and turbulent careers, Bette Midler delivers two knock-out production numbers and a half-dozen songs. Although the women’s friendship is the film’s core, what lingers is CC’s chilling number in an experimen- tal musical and an amusing vulgar- ity that celebrates brassieres. It’s great to see a film where two women mature through each other, but Beaches relies too much on overused plot devices.
