34 - Sunday, December 4, 1988 - North Shore News $500,000 AVAILABLE Youth Grants Program ‘789 deadline looms THE DEADLINE for the 1989 Youth Grants Pro- gram, an initiative of the B.C. Youth Advisory Coun- cil and funded by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Job Train- ing, is Dec. 31. The grants will be awarded to people with ideas that will con- tribute to the development of in- dependence, participation and pos- itive attitudes among young peonle {aged 15 to 24) in the community. A total of $500,000 is avuilable province-wide, with no set iimit on the amount available for individual projects. The program is a _ one-time, one-year grant for pilot or demonstration youth projects. Anyone is eligible to apply, but individuals and unregistered or unincorporated bodies are required to act as an umbrella for the pro- ject. Businesses may sponsor pro- jects but proposed activities cannot offer a competitive advantage and any profit must be used to benefit young people or to offset project expenses. Examples of successful projects include: ®A peer counselling project related to alcohol and drugs _ eEstablishment of a drop-in cen- tre for youth Production of a video encourag- ing able-bodied and physically- challenged youth to participate, side by sicc, both competitively and non-comrctitively Carrying out a survey to deter- mine the extent of teen and young adult illiteracy in a community.
