6 — Wednesday, November 23, 1988 - North Shore News INSIGHTS | Keep a careful eye now on how far Brian goes! I BOUGHT HALF A POUND OF CROW Monday — just in case. Writing about politics calls for a strong stomach at the best of times. Wright’s ‘Tory minority’’ forecast was almost dead on for the Prairies and B.C. — and for Atlantic Canada it was generous, giving the PCs 15 seats instead of the 12 they got. But not even those last-minute Saturday polls showing a sudden four to six per cent Tory lead suggested that Brian Mulroney could actually IN- CREASE his 1984 Quebec seats and hang on to two-thirds of his former seats in provincially Liberal Ontario. It’s also to be noted that a straight national referendum would have killed the trade deal. Despite the majority by consti- tuencies, the Tories won only 43 per cent of the popular vote. That said, it’s my personal opi- nion that the deal — even though I didn’t think it could survive — is a better ‘‘leap of faith’’ for Canada ALICE HARGREAVES ...youth guardian. than throwing away altogether the chance to explore its possibilities. The country was built by men and women who believed that nothing ventured meant nothing won. But as negotiations on the details con- tinue over the next few years, it’s equally clear that we must keep a careful eye on how far Brian will go, if Uncle Sam starts pressing for more of Canada than the majority of Canadians are prepared to sell. At the least sign of any betrayal of the values we Canadians hold dear, I'll be the first to man the barricades. ete CIVIC ELECTIONS Saturday saw the North Shore universe unfold more or less according to pian. In West Van, with a recount pending for the sixth aldermanic scat be- tween Barrie Clark and Carol Reynolgs, Mayor Don Lanskail won his second term, but with a warning message. Challenger Bert Fleming’s campaign was invisible to the naked eye — with neither lawn sigr.s, ads nor a brochure — but he stiil received 26 per cent of the mayoral vote. Meanwhile, the twin towers referendum brought no fast relief. The defeat of the highrise project by a hairbreadth 50.18 per cent fails to give any real directive to council, which has a potentially costly lawsuit by the developer hanging over its (and the zaxpayer’s!) head. With 82 per cent of the North ’ Yan District mayoral vote Marilyn Baker easily won her fourth term by crushing challenger Peter Faminow, who DID run an expen- sive full-scale campaign. Surprise Reward due vince was stopped cold at the Burrard Inlet T HE FEDERAL NDP steamroil across the pro- bridges Monday when Nerth Shore friends of free trade returned the two Tory incumbent MPs. In the provincial context, the solid biue wall is an anomaly. The majority of the 32 seats went to the NDP. Ard they grabbed them from the Tories. With Pat Carney out of the picture and Forests upset in the election night numbers was the 5-vote defeat of longtime Ald. Ernie Crist by newcomer Pat Bruskiewich. If upheld on a re- count — and together with the retirement of Ald. Mary Segal — it would mean the new District council, for the first time in a de- cade, would have not a single left- teaning member. tn SIGN-OFF: New honor for North Shore ballet choreagrapher Juditt Marcuse was the world premiere this month of her latest creation, “Threncdy’’, at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre. FOLLOW THROUGH WITH) YU a OY Minister Gerry St. Germain chopped dowa by the NDP, 8.C. presently has two cabinet-experienced Tory representatives — Fisheries Minister Tom Siddon and Science Minister Frank Oberle. While both Capilano-Howe Sound MP Mary Collins and North Vancouver MP Chuck Cook won easily, the strong first-tinve-out showing by the Reform Party bit into their percentages. The obvious message to Ottawa is that there is western dissatisfaction even in the safe North Shore ridings. Collins has served the House of Commons since 1984. Cook has delivered the Conservative vote in North Vancouver since 1979. When the time comes for Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to hand out the port- folios to the successful MP foot soldiers, he would be politically astute to think hard about passing some of the rewards on to the seasoned local MPs. 980-0511 Display Advertising 986-6222 Classified Advertising Newsroom 985-2131 2 Distribution 986-1337 i aes Pum Subscriptions 986-1337 “e F 985-3227 1139 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, B.C.
