LIFESTYLES Breakthrougn gives hope for victims of muscular dystrophy THIS YEAR'S Muscular Dystrophy campaign, culminating in the 22nd annual Jerry Lewis Telethon Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. to Sept. 5 at 3:30 p.m., offers even more hope than in years past. Canadian researchers, Dr. Stephen Wood of the University of British Columbia among them, have isolated the protein “dystrophin? whose deficiency is linked with the occurrence of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Although there is enormous work to be done before the curtain is lifted on this complex disease, it is an encouraging sign for B.C. families who are affected by il, such as the Bains of Squamish, Hieberts of Port Coquitlam and the Randalls of Kamloops. Curtis Randall, #1, is repre- senting fellow muscular dystrophy sufferers during this year’s cam- paign. Many motorists saw the Randall family this summer, when they undertook a_ motorcycle cavalcade on B.C. highways. Randall has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, one of 40 diseases of the group which are characterized by progressive weakening and wasting of the muscles that contro} body movement. UBC’s Wood, an assistant pro- fessor of medical genetics, has spent five years exploring the pat- tern of incidence of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and develop- ing pre-natal diagnosis and tech- niques for the disease.
