According to jean merchandise
manager John Ermatinger, denim
fabric treatments will continue to
be strong through spring and fall
1988.

“Acid-washed deniin has paved
the way for a host of innovative
denim finishes,"’ says Ermatinger.
“Finishing gives denim an interest-
ing look, and it softens the fabric,
which makes it more comfor-
table.”*

White-washed jeans are washed
with pumice stones soaked in
bleach, producing a soft, even
finish, as if the jeans have been
brushed lightly with 4a coat of

paint. The stones saften the jeans
while the bleach completes the
denim's light finish.

in addition to the whitewashed
denim, fashion forward consumers
can look forward to seeing jeans in
the following fabric treatments for
spring and fall of 1988:

«Snow washed ~- lightly shaded
jean that has been whitewashed;

© Dark washed — a whitewash-
ed jean with a very deep bluc
finish;

* Striped whitewashed —- an in-
digo of grey striped jean that has
been treated with pumice stones
soaked in bleach;

*Galactic — a white, speckled
Milky Way effect produced in a
dark jean;

eSnow washed in colors —~
Dark indigo fabric is dyed yellow,
brick red, purple, teal, green or
black and then snow washed.

Short skirt takeover debated

clothes make a dramatic move in
the direction of the boardroom.

How complete the takeover by
short skirts and shorts will be re-
mains to be seen — however, a
peek ahead at fall '88 indicates
that designers and manufacturers
will be dropping hemlines, at least
to some extent.

That’s good news for those who
have opted to remain’ faithful to
their long skirts.

On the other hand, those who
have embraced the new-again short
skirts can feel confident that these
pert, perky and slightly imperti-
nent styles will be flattering
youthful figures and attracting at-
tention — if not forever, at least
for several seasons to come.
