Gunn owas selected by Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) and deseribed by the organization as an “exceptional young woman.”” GGC national public relations officer Barbara Meisner said each year hundreds of girls from the organization apply, but only a few applicants are forwarded to the provincial and eventually the na- tional selections’ committees for consideration. Gunn said she was surprised by the honor. She said it was the first time she applied to take part in an interna- tional girl guide camp. FUN ORGANIZATION Gunn is currently a Pathfinder within the organization, which is a level for older girls. She began as a Brownie when she was seven years old, after hearing from a friend that it was a fun organization to join. Canada at an international guiding event in lor many years she was a guide, until becoming a Pathfinder in hus, As a Brownie she achieved 32 badves, 24 as a guide. In Pathfinders, Gunn has ac- cumulated all of her bronze and two of her silver levels. The categories for Pathfinders, she said, are camping, outdoors, home, community and world. To achieve the bronze levels a Pathfinder must) have completed 10 challenges for each section. For silver the number is 20 and for gold it is 30. GOLD LEVELS Gunn said she hopes to reach the gold level in all events by the end of her third year in Pathfinders. Gunn's Pathfinder unit has been involved in local fund raising to raise money for her trip to Ireland. The girls have done car washes, a bottle drive and chicken sales. The Canadian World Friendship Fund donated more than $500 to heip finance Gunn's trip, and the girl guides at the district and pro- vincial level will also be con- tributing money towards the trip.
