But it turned out that he wanted something: support for The Friends of Public Broadcasting. Iam a friend of public broad- casting, as it happens. I watch PBS’s Channel 9 a lot, also the Knowledge Network, partly because the programs are not lit- tered with ads fer toilet paper and ‘tampons. But what Pierre had in ‘mind was the CBC. Let me be fair about this, I used to toil for that corporation and it treated me well. (I treated it well, too.) The superintendent reports happily that student enrolment is holding. A year ago there were 15,201 students. This year there are 15,216, an increase of 15. But that’s not the item. The item is that there are 22 more teacners employed this year than last. Wonderful! Fifteen more students, 22 more teachers! And the pupil-teacher ratio in the district is 17.04, the lowest in the Lower Mainland. Santa came early this year for some. x k * Berton’s wasn’t the only com- munication in my mailbag. I also had one from Mr. Glenn Babb, who used to be South ‘Aftica’s ambassador to Canada. Mr. Babb sent a news clipping in which he was quoted as saying that South Africa is now doing so much business with the rest of Africa that Johannesburg has become the New York of the continent. “There is fascination for our successes,’ he stated. ‘‘Some 80,000 black businessmen came to our country last year...and it is believed that more than 45 of the continent’s 50 states have trade or aid relations with South Africa.” So much for sanctions. Our sanctions, that is. Mr. Babb is now deputy director-general in the South African foreign office. The mind is capable of much more than it is given credit for, It can help you break out of long standing routines and allow you to take control and improve your life. I have used hypnosis for. many years as a tool which helps unlock. the mind’s strengths and loosens the grip - of old undesirable habits. Com- bined with counselling, it pro- vides a comprehensive ap- proach to problem solving. In this way [ have helped clients quit smoking, lose weight, reduce anxiety, sleep better and overcome, a myriad of other problems. Hypnosis aliows the sub- conscious to be more accessi- ble and open to suggestion. Often our troubles appear monstrous due to our con- scious attitude or perspective. By reducing your anxiety about the problem, and becoming relaxed, problems can be view- ed and approached from anew angle. They become less threatening and more manageable. Counselling aids hypnosis by ‘for example. understanding the actual pro- blem and changing your think- ing and feeling about it. There are often underlying causes for such ‘common -problems_ as overeating and smoking; stress, depression or poor self-esteem, Once these: causes are identified and'dealt 4 with, the bad - habit cant be , overcome. 4 : Hypnosis. has been misrepresented for centuries, often wrongly depicted as a. trance-like state in which the hypnotist has total control over the other person. However, hypnosis is a natural state of mind where you are able to ac- cept and act upon suggestions more easily. Hypnotherapy allows you to take control by letting you see that you really do have many more options open to you than ou first thought and it can help you approach change gladly and freely.
