Drug and alcohol outpatient program planned for N. Shore

their collective pockets the
Breakaway Drug Abuse Society
was up and running by the end of
November with a home base at S:.
Stephen’s Anglican Church in
Burnaby.

According to Westerlund, now a
Breakaway board director, 50 per
cent of the program funding comes
from parents, charitable + ontribu-
tions and sundry fund-raising pro-
jects. The other 5% per cent,
$32,000, is covered by the provin-
cia! government to help pay for
start-up and operating costs to
March 1988.

Said Westerlund: ‘We're hoping
to open a day drug and alcohol
cutpatient treatment program on
the North Shore by January or
February."’

The daily program in Burnaby is
backed by nightly evening social
activities. There are also weekly

separate evening meetings for teens
and parents every Monday at St.
Stephen’s and Friday nights at St
John’s Anglican church in North
Vancouver.

The Breakaway program offers
a venue for mutual support for
both parents and young people
whose fives have been disrupted by
substance abuse. Troubled teens
are provided with a peer group
based on acceptance and mutual
accountability. Parents are offered
group discussions and group
counselling.

Fully one half of the young
people currently participating in
the program come from the North
Shore. ‘‘We started with five and
now we have consistently 15 kids
three to nine months sober,”’ said
Birnbaum.

Nineteen-year-old Bill has been
in the program for approximately
eight months and has remained
sober for six months.
