Gameplan hopes to improve rapport

MINISTER OF Tourism, Recre-
ation and Culture Bill Reid recent-
ly announced Gameplan 2,000, a
new initiative designed to build a
better relationship between gov-
ernment, sport-governing bodies
and the private sector.

Speaking to key officials of the
province’s sport-governing bodies
at a meeting co-sponsored by the
ministry and Sport B.C., Reid an-
nounced five initiatives under
Gameplan 2,000:

@ Formation of a B.C. Sport
and Recreation Advisory Council
consisting of representatives of key
umbrella sport and_ recreation
organizations. The council will
provide a forum for examination
of the broad issues relating to the
development of sport, recreation
and fitness in British Columbia.

e Emphasis on sport for the
disabled. Working with the British
Columbia Sport and Fitness
Council! for the Disabled, the
ministry will redefine its policies

regarding disabled athletes and will
establish a Fund For Excellence to
support the participation of handi-
capped athletes in national and in-
ternational games.

© Multi-year funding. A new
funding system for spart and rec-
reation organizations will replace
annual applications with long-term
funding agreements.

®* A new approach to sport
development and marketing. In
cooperation with Sport B.C.,
SportMarket will develop a mar-

toria, clubs, business

keting partnership arrangement
between the private sector and in-
dividual sports organizations. The
program will provide a source of
co-op advertising dollars to match
marketing dollars raised from the
private sector.
