Seasickness cure ‘patchy’

I'VE OFTEN been asked
how I choose the letters |
reply to in the column.

First, I try to print ones that are
of interest to a wide number of
readers. After all, there aren't too
many people who want to know
about yak trails in Outer
Mongolia.

Which brings me to the second
point — I don’t know the first
thing about yak trails in Mongolia
or anywhere else for that matter. |
do know where I could probably
find out, but I think I'll pass on
that.

Next, I’ve got to watch my step.
Some of the letters I receive, if
printed, could land me in hot

water deep enough to drown. If .

you could just read some of the
names people coin for hotels,
resorts and airlines that have given
less than their best you'd unders-
tand,.

Some letters are turned over to
specific agencies for investigation.

For example, a recent complaint
about our Consulate in the Philip-
pines went to Ottawa. Another
complaint about an airline was
given to the public relations
department for sorting out.

and verified I'll often print the
resulis as a caution for the rest of
us.

Now for a coup’e of letters:

Dear Barbara: Great caution
should be recommended in using
patches behind the ear for
seasickness. It has made two
friends of mine seriously ill with

long-lasting after effects.

Answer: Any medication may
cause adverse effects on in-
dividuals. Worse, some drugs that
were considered perfectly safe at
one point (consider thalidomide!)
are found to have dreadful conse-
quences.

[ talked to a pharmacist who
told me that the active ingredient
in the patches is scopolamine and
anyone who has a history of dif-
ficulties arising from its use
shouldn't use the patches.

There is a long list of cautions
for users. For example, if you have
any one of the following, don’t use
the patches:

— Glaucoma

— Pyloric,
obstructons

— Metabolic
problems.

Also, the patches should not be
used by kids, pregnant women or
nursing mothers.
