the person who does the smallest
jobs.

The price you pay for a drill
should reflect the need. But price
cannot be the sole factor.

SIZES — Common sizes for
electric drills are “%, % and
Y inch. The size indicates the max-
imum size of shank diameter that can
be gripped in the chuck, not the drill-
ing capacity.

Most %-inch drills can handle a
l-inch wood boring bit through
soft wood but may not have the
power for the job especially over a
long period of time.

Generally you can tell if the drill
is over-worked if the drill gets hot,
slows down to the point of not
cutting or stalls. If the drill starts
to smoke the damage has already
been done. Remember, a light low
amperage drill should only be used
for light jobs.

SPEEDS — Originally you did
not have a choice concerning the
speed of a drill. Usually the larger
the chuck capacity the slower the
drill. Now that has all been chang-
ed,

You can buy variable speed
drills in almost any size but this
does not mean the drill will do
every jab. ft will work better in the
various materials but still will not,
if overtaxed, last for long.

The first one to Jook for is the
double insulated feature that is
appearing on more and = more
brands.

This is a safety factor that pro-
tect you from any voltage leaks
that might result from a short cir-
cuit in the machine.

This is particularly important if
there is any dampness in the work
area. It also eliminates the need for
a grounded outlet which is some-
times hard to find in older
buildings.

The cords on the grounded drills
have only two prongs.

OPERATING TECHNIQUES

Always maintain a firm grip on
the tool. The larger the drill, the
more torque it can generate and if
you are caught off guard you
could suffer an injury.

If vou are drilling large holes
(wo hands on the tool is wise. If
you are drilling metal the bits will
often grab just as they break
through the bottom of the hole.

If you are drilling a small piece
of material be sure it does not
grab, spin and cut you. When star-
ting a hole in metal it is wise to use
a centre punch first.

Back up work with a piece of
scrap to avoid splintering on break
through. When drilling use this
general rule: high speed for small
holes; /ow for large in wood (ex-
cept spade bits): slow for metal.
