Cana- dian hospitals, is also the finest volunteer blood donor program in the world. In 1984. 135,000 pints of blood were collected in B.C. alone. This blood helps accident victims, cancer patients, burn victims, hemophiliacs and surgery patients. Red Cross volunteers donate an astounding amount of time and North Vancouver volunteers are no exception. In 1984 volun- teers contributed 2,890 hours of time to blood clinics; 400 hours to supervision of clinics; 1,800 hours to phon- ing donors; 100 hours to the loan cupboard; 7,244 hours to Assistance, International and Domestic (A.I.D.); 100 hours to emergency services and 50 hours of time was spend by the chairman. If McGurk is indicitive of other Red Cross volunteers, it is no wonder Red Cross has been as successful as it is. A widow and_ retired teacher, McGurk spends roughly 400-500 hours a year as chairperson of the North Vancouver blood program. She co-ordinates and super- vises blood donor clinics and volunteers on the North Shore. A resident of B.C. for 15 years, she has been involved in the Red Cross for 30 years. And everything she does is on a volunteer . basis. “It’s very worthwhile,” says McGurk. ‘‘When you believe in something it makes it easier to work.
