N paign, The Globe & Mail ran a front-page
shot of John Turner grimacing as he gave

a speech in front of a coat of arms emblazoned with

two huge upright forks.

It looked like Turner had
horns sticking out of his head,
like some kind of devil.

., At that point I almost
‘decided to vote for the poor,
er, devil.

At the same time, as a
member of the Fourth Estate
since the late 50s, I cringed,

y’know?. Yellow journalism?

Whew!

_ Canadian newspapers are
supposed to be better than
they used to be, incidentally.
They don’t publish. editions
with screaming headlines like
SOCRED .SEX SCANDAL
HINTED!

Except in Quebec, crirae,
sports and bleeding heart tales
of fost one-legged puppies
aren’t the main news events of
the day any longer. '

To get a job as a reporter on
most papers nowadays you
have to have something called

a journalism degree. ‘To get

as the five Ws,. the inverted
pyramid, and the snappy lead,
