AMADEUS MOZART
would smile if he could
hear the 40 North
Shore Suzuki violin and
. cello students master
Twinkle, Twinkle,
Little Star.

The tune which originated
as a theme by Mozart, ts
used to inspire thousands of
children all over the world to
learn the violin or cello via
the Shinichi Suzuki method
of music instruction.

The North Shore children,
eight cellists and 32
violinists, range in age from
4 to 9. They are taught by
listening and imitating, and
parents are also involved -
they are considered the
‘teachers’ at home. Oc-
casionally their hardest task
is to imitate the famous
Suzuki smile, while the
children struggle through
their first ‘Twinkle’

After Twinkle, Twinkle,
Little Star has been polished,
the children progress to
Bach, Vivaldi, and Brahms,
with technique building
piece by piece, in the child's
own time. Reading is in-
troduced later.

The North Shore program
is administered by Capilano
College, and the children
will perform with children
from” all over’ British
Columbia at the Orpheum
on May 14. A’ summer
concert will be held towards
the end of June
