Dear Editor: During the last couple of weeks, several letters and articles attacking Mrs. Grace McCarthy, Minister of Human Resources, have appeared in newspapers of the lower mainland. Since it is obvious” the truly needy and those unable to work would not be among those encouraged to leave welfare to order to rejoin the -work force, I am making my comments with regard to those who perhaps do not know how to rejoin the work force or as single parents. may not have found suitable understanding that Mrs. " McCarthy ‘intends to help with daycare facilities thus freeing the single parent to work, ‘What is importantshere is that an effort is being made to help people to help themselves. ‘The sense of achievement and _.respon- sibility that comes with paying your own way cannot be provided by government. To those who will dismiss my opinion by saying I must not know what it is to be poor, let me say that I come from an ethnic refugee family that was poor. My father, though educated, worked at menial jobs to ‘support us when we arrived -in this country. In those days, it’ was not govern- ment’s responsibility to «protect and aid the in- daycare facilities. It is my ~ dividual from cradle to grave. It was the individual's responsibility to seize his opportunities in a _ free country and make the most of them. Certainly it is not as easy as turning to govern- ment to solve all one’s issue here. problems. But then the. price ; for individual freedom is’ individual responsibility — it is not always an easy price to pay. If that responsibility however, is handed more and more over to govern- ment, the individual ultimately ceases to be free. . It is imsulting- to those presently on welfare to imply that they are unable to rise to the challenge of life by accepting encouragement to rejoin the work force. A very basic principle is at That of the freedom of the individual. I believe Mrs. McCarthy is attempting to give these people back their freedom by returning to. them their individual responsibility. I commend her for it! Mona Benge West Vancouver Not against amalgamation Dear Editor: Your‘front page story of September 30, dealing with the decision of North Vancouver City council to hold a referendum to determine if voters want an amalgamation study, was inaccurate insofar as ‘it related to my comments. Your story stated that “Alderman Ralph Hall said he was against amalgamation ” Wrong. I said that amalgamation -of the City and District had been an emotional issue during the fifties and early sixties but that today it is a non-issue. But | said that I would go along with the referendum even though I have not heard one City resident in the last five years express an interest in re- uniting the two municipalities. But at those times amalgamation was a real issue. While I'don't think there is any interest in amalgamation, should the people indicate otherwise I, as an alderman, would feel duty-bound to carry out their wishes regardless of how I might personally feel. The only two people who seem to be flogging amalgamation are District Mayor Don Bell and District Alderman Ernie = Crist. Strange bedfellows. However, they have a right to their views, although they Dinner Spe 2 dinners for the price of 1 TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY ONLY should keep their noses out of City business. Frankly, I don’t give a damn if they don’t like the fact that the City is going to, hold a- referendum. I suggest they have enough problems in their own municipality without meddling in City affairs. I'm pleased that City council members supported the notion that we should go to the people before getting involved in a amalgamation study. Mayor Bell may regard this as “sabotaging” amalgamation, but I view it as pure, simple common sense. Ralph Hall _ Alderman North Vancouver City Nothing $100,000 - sacred Dear Editor: Having been retired for the last four years, I have settled into a schedule of events each week, one of which is to call on the Avalon Pub once during the weekday. This was interrupted by. a period of overdue renovation in which a sturdy wood carved sign designated “The Avalon Pub” was hung in the middle of the place. However; recently I witnessed in shock a young man simply walk up, lift the sign, and walk out! Is nothing sacred? K.E. Markham North Vancouver | Classified 986-6222 Grand PRIZE 1. Grand PRIZE 2.
