A7 - Wednesday, March 3, 1982 - North Shore News GE mailbox ee Highrise should be dead AND buried Dear Editor: Having followed the on again, off agam 20-storey highrise at the corner of 22nd and Bellevue in West Van for the past three years | find it baffling why the West Van council members continue to let this particular developer drag this un- wanted cement box (the second largest in Wést Van municipality) to infinitum. One council member suggested the contractor- developer narrow this monster from 96 ft. wide to 84 ft. (12 feet narrower). This council member must be narrow-minded to think this is going to help appease all the concerned residents up to and including Lawson Avenue. whose views will be obstructed by this mon- strosity. North Shore News on Feb. 24th, headlined "“W.V. highrise project ‘dead'.” | would suggest this project should be “DEAD AND BURIED”! For the good of the municipality. Our mayor and council members, along’ with municipal staff. have only Windsor is good too Dear Editor: It never ceases to amaze me how much coverage Carson Graham always gets. You stated in your article that Carson Graham music students are somewhat more talented than the = music students at other schools in this area. If this is true, then explain to me why Windsor Secondary placed first in the B.C. Vocal Jazz Festival last year. You also said that Carson Graham has the best facilines. Let it be known that Windsor Secondary has the largest music room in lower B.C. Besides, if they are so well equipped. why are they always borrowing our sound system (in part and in whole) from Windsor. Just) because Carson Graham seems to. have everything going for them, it doesn't mean that they are “the best”. 1 know for a fact that Argyle has a very good music program this year and also that other schools are worth mentioning. Don’t get me wrong, I have many frends that are students at Carson Graham, however I have been a_ student at Windsor for nearly five years and I am proud of all the musical, sporting and academic endeavors that Windsor has undertaken and succeeded at. Perhaps in the future you could consider some fair coverage on other schools in the North Vancouver area. Jennifer L. Porter North Vancouver (The News ts always happy to publish stones of the achievements of ALL North Shore schools. But due to staff limitations we have to rely on the schools them- selves to keep us informed of theirr activities. Let's hear from you ali regularly’— ED) Women need help to parity Dear Editor. I am continually offended by your weekly presentation of the solicitous “Sunshine Girl.” Need I remind you that the image of today’s woman is that of a multifaceted individual, not the dimensional “sex your pictures portray. Thus I appeal that vou not one object” take advantage of those uneducated young women willing to pose as the “Sunshine Girl”. But rather, I urge you to be responsible and do your part in ensuring women find the panty they have long struggled to achieve Robin Kirby North Vancouver [| Rthassenn is pleased to announce one recourse for this dragged-out farce and that is to cancel the application of development permit 80-06 with a re-submission by the developer of a scaled down 56-suite townhouse’ type scheme (NO HIGHER THAN 5 STOREYS) that blends in with the type of development that the council members should be Parks closed Dear Editor: I am registering a com- plaint against the constant closure of parks for recreational activities on the North Shore. Although there have been obvious times when it was unsuitable for players and fields alike. there have been = several occasions during the last two months when cancellation of games have been quite unnecessary. In this variable climate, conditions are likely to change overnight and decisions regarding state of fields should not be made prior to the date of expected use. In cases where the weather is acceptably deplorable. a blanket statement 138 justified: trying to encourage to maintain one of the most beautiful municipalities on the Lower Mainland. Even Vancouver council finally had the guts to put a stop to future highrises. When will our council do the same? Frank Beallie West Vancouver too often however, weekends such as the two that have just passed (and several others that come to mind but were not recorded) should have left the judgements to the referee on an_ individual basis. Throughout the Lower Mainland, the North Shore has more park closures than any other municipality. As a taxpayer I suggest that the fields are there for the use of the public and while no one wishes to encourage the abuse or ruin of our beautiful parks, the protection of them has reached ridiculous proportions.
