The North Shore
Museum and Archives
is “in very good shape
and very well-
organized.” The asses-
sment was made by
Janet Cowan = and
Margaret Meikle,
conservators from the
Canadian Conservation
Institute (CEI).

The women spent three

days last week at the
museum in Presentation
House, checking’ the

facilities and making some
restorations.

They said they found the
people well-informed and
were impressed by the
number of volunteers.

But they did find a
problem with the building
itself. Parts of it are damp
and space, especially for
storage, is limited. As well,
temperature variations

present a hazard to the life
span of many artefacts.

The CCI is a component of
the National Museums of
Canada and offers a con-
servation service for the
preservation of
cultural collections. The
program, begun last June,
makes use of a mobile con-
servation laboratory.

The mobile laboratory
contains basic conservation
equipment and is used to
conduct on-site conservation
examinations and _ treat-
ments. As well the conserva-
tors monitor museum en-
vironments for light and
humidity levels and consult
directly with museum
curators on the care, storage
and display of artifacts.

As a pilot project, a
mobile laboratory operated
in the Atlantic Region for
several months during the
summer of 1979. The
