‘William Shakespeare’ Ss extraordinarily vivid chroni-
cle of unrest and revolution in 12th century England,
RICHARD Hl, will air Wednesday, March 28 on PBS as

the fourth presentation in Season One of THE
SHAKESPEARE PLAYS.

production—calls ‘‘astonishingly beautiful."’ Its central
character, Richard |! (portrayed by Derek Jacobi,
pictured), is too much a poet to be a man of action,
too much a dreamer to be King. Lost in a vain haze
of self-contemplation, he endangers his ‘divinely

appointed” right to rule through a-series of disastrous .]

decisions ...only to find himself. faced with an
insurrection led. by the calculating, business-like

Bolingbroke (Jon Finch). Ultimately, Richard—the last ~

King of England to be directly descended from William
the Conqueror—is. overthrown and Bolingbroke
assumes the throne and the name, Henry IV.

RICHARD II is graced by an outstanding cast. In
addition to Jacobi, Gielgud and Finch, the supporting
cast includes such distinguished performers as Dame
Wendy Hiller as the Duchess of York, Charles Gray as
the Duke of York, Mary Morris as the Duchess of
Gloucester and David Swift as Richard's most
deep-seated enemy, the Earl of Northumberland. The
director is David Giles. 7

The next play to be presented (on April 11) will
be one of Shakespeare's most brilliant and controver-
sial comedies, MEASURE FOR MEASURE, starring Kate
Nelligan, Tim Pigott-Smith, Kenneth Colley, John
McEnery and Christopher Strauli.

The series, which will present new productions of”

all 37 of William Shakespeare's dramatic works over
the next six years, is a BBC-TV and Time-Life Television
