No one was seriously .. injured in the 10 a.m. inci- . dent that involved six Grade 11. male students. It took. todk 10 school staff. members and several police officers to return peace to the school. Carson’s new Principal, ~ Larry Brown, called a school assembly that same day to review student conduct. “I was pretty emotional about my expectations of wanting this school to be like a family. I expect this school to be a safe haven and this to be a place where teaching and learning is the focus of what we do. I need the help of the kids to do this,” said ‘Brown on Tuesday. One Carson staff member was hit by an apple while attempting to break up Friday’s fight. The school principat said the brother of one student brandished: a stecring wheel locking club. Brown said the club was being used in a “threatening Suspensions meted out at NV school manner.” Police also said a rock was thrown into a crowd and narrowly = missed _ hitting someone in the head. The school principal said altogether cight Grade 11 male students were suspend- ed for participating in Friday’s brawl and for threats and pushing and shoving incidents which occurred over a few days leading up to the fight. Brown said two other stu- dents involved in the fight are being sent to other high schools. “That’s just for the greater peace and safety of everyone,” said Brown. “There has been a lot of upset in the school, a lot of kids really upset.” The school principal said that he had arranged mect- ings with approximately 18 students and parents after he had suspended some stu- dents prior to Friday's inci- dent. “I choughe the matter was resolved on Thursday morn- ing, but it scems it wasn’t... To be honest with you, I have no idea what happened in the summer. All I know is that we’ve had to deal with the anger gencrated some place else,” said Brown. Brown said he was mect- ing with a parent of one of the students in the princi- pal’s office when the fist tight started. North Vancouver RCMP Const. Tom Seaman said there were “clear aggressors” in the fight. He said a possible cause of the fight involved a com- ment made by one of the male students about anoth- er’s girlfriend during the pre- vious week. “There has obviously been some strong animosity between these people for some time now,” — said Scaman. Police say that before the fight began, one suspended student and his father arrived at the school in a car. “Some other kids started harassing him and_ spitting on the car,” said Seaman. Some of the teenagers were detained by police, but ne one was arrested. Seaman said that if police decided to recommend charges against any of the teenagers, the charges would include assault and causing a disturbance by fighting.
