10 — Wednesday, January 24, 1996 - North Shore News Capilano c lub continues to fight eviction THE MAXIM that you can't fight city hall is falling on deaf ears at the Capilano Sportsmen's Club. By lan Noble News Reporter Mare than three weeks after the club was ordered by the District of West Vancouver to vacate its Ambleside home, the club remains ensconced in its municipally owned digs. “We're sul there and I’m adamant we're going to stay.” said club president Lynn Coules. The district wants the club's clubhouse, which includes a shoot- ing range, for use as a youth vut- teach centre. The club defied a Dec. 18 order from West Vancouver's lawyer telling the club to vacate by Dec. 31 if it refused to abide by district conditions for a one-month occu- pancy extension. The club did not agree to the extension conditions, nor did it teave, said Coules. On Jan. !9, West Vancouver told the club to be out by Feb. 1. Club members are trying to get their hands on a 1952 document that outlines the conditions attached to the transfer of the club- house fo the municipality, said Coules, Club members believe the document will state that West Vancouver agreed to lease the facility to the club in perpetuity. Members will also ask the Department of National Defence to provide documents concerning the transfer of the “old prewar army huts” that house the club to the Air Force Cadets, said Coules. Coules said cadets were unable to maintain the building, so they transferred it to the club and leased the space back. She added if the district won't Jease the land to the club for the building, the club will move the building. However, district lawyer Paul Wilson says, to the district's knowledge, the club has never owned the building and did not donate it to the municipality. “The suggestion of moving the building to another site is, there- fore, unacceptable.” said Wilson in a Jan. 12 letter to the club. Wilson said he has been instructed to ensure the building is vacated. Mayor Mark Sager was more explicit: “It’s over.” If you wish to sell your vehicle directly to Mercedes Benz or for a current evaluation of your vehicle, please contact the Sales Manager at your convenience. _ Heritage Program ominations are now being accepted for the 1996 City of ey North Vancouver Heritage Awards.
