19 ~ North Shore News — Wednesday, February 23, 2000 MAIL Bo New trash-can edict is garbage Support for United Way appreciated Dear Editor: Re: new garbage regula- tions. The edict in the Feb. 13 North Shore News is non- sense, | happen to have two of the 12} -litre cans, which are now unacceptable for garbage pickup. Pye had these cans for over 15 years; in my opinion they are still in excellent con- dition, raccoon- and bear- proof, and still have years of use left in them. Now [ am being toid that TP will have to get od of them and purchase new ones which do not have wheels which make getting it to the street far easier an my old bones. (Plastic bays are not even a consideration and we have no space to put one of the larger bins which the district is pushing.) As I con- sider this an unnecessary expense, 1] think the district should be prepared to credit my tax bill with the vost of the new cans so that [can comply with these new regu Jations. It has long been my understanding that one per: son cas lift up to 70 Tbs. and bevend that there have to be two people. From now on [can see that we will have to keep a weigh-scale in the carport. | think the new rule is prepos- terous. Our garbage has been greatly reduced due to recy- cling (Vancouver has the highest record for reeveling in North America). Why not let us use our larger cans and let the garbage man determine whether they are too heavy for him te Jift, The cans that are nor overweight, regardless of their size, could then be emptied. I think this matter should be looked at in more depth so we can find a way where evervone wits. David Bolt North Vancouver NV District public hearing ads misleading Dear Editor: In ewe full-page ads, North Vancouver District has adver- tised the Feb. 22 public hear- ing on changing bed and breakfast regulations. In mind- numbing detail, the unsus- pecting, taxpayer is fulled into believing that any changes are administrative in nature. In truth, as far as the community is concerned, che most impor- tant aspect has been omitted — namely that the current three-bedroom limit will be expanded to six units and 12 guests. U believe the district is hon- our bound in advertising the true intent of any bylaw. To do otherwise is unethical and underhanded. H passed, some lucky residents are going to wake up one morning and find a mini-motel open for business next to their home. Surely, such profound changes to the bed and break- fast bylaw should not be hid- den irom district homeowners. Ron Dumoucheile President United Way of the Lower Mainland Crime would follow tunnel Dear Editor: West Vancouver Coun. John Clark's idea for a tunnel that will connect Main Street with the Lower Lonsdale area may turn out to be one of the worst things that could possi- bly happen to the North Shore. The proposal will result in a short commute for North Vancouver residents into the centre of Vancouver, but it will also resule in a shore commute for Vancouver resi- dents (ic. those of Main and Hastings) into the centre of North Vancouver. : Once the tunnel is up and running, the problems of that particular area will penetrate into the Lower Lonsdale area, . One can only assume that an extraordinary increase in property crimes and victim: less crimes (prostitution, drug dwaling) will occur. The proposed — tunnel would also be located next to the major transit hub of Lonsdale Quay, which fre- quently disperses countless buses throughout the North Shore. North Shore residents should be aware that the pro-- posed tunnel will do to North Vancouver what the SkyTrain did to Surrey. Adam J.
