Photo Liam Daniel ARTHUR Winslow (Nigel Hawthorne) and wife Grace (Gemma Jones) receive the bad news that their young son has been expelled from schooi on an accusation of theft. A question of family hon “The Winslow Boy kkk (out ef 5) ; ; Starring Nigel Hawthorne, Jeremy Northam, Rebecca Pidgeon and Gemma Jones. Directed by David Mamet. Julie Crawford Film Reviews WHO would have : thought that a 13-year- old boy and the theft of a five-shilling postal note could rock the British justice system? Based on a true story and adapted from Terrence Rattigan’s play, David Mamet’s film chronicles the quest of the Winslow family to clear young Ronnie's name after he is expelled from the Naval College for supposedly stealing a postal nore. The case became the O.J. Simpson-trial of its day, with editorials, cartoons and “save the Winslow Bay” memora- bilia aplenty. As with most sensational trials, this one too came at great personal expense to the Winslow fam- ily. . Arthur Winslow (Nigel Hawthorne, The Madness of King George) is slightly ahead of his time, for a father in 1912 England. He ‘indulges his daughter Catherine’s (Rebecca Pidgcon) work with the fledgling suffrage movement; he discourages Catherine, at the perilous age of 30, from making an advantagevus but loveless marriage; and he needs only his son’s word to be convinced of his inno- -cence. ON ew ee ee oe ee 2 oy Winsiow appeals co Sir Robert Morton (Jeremy Northam, Ewaia), celebrated attorney of the day, to plead his case, Morton, sensing the publicity such an attack on the Admiralty might cause, takes the case: more to fur- ther his own reputation than to clear the boy’s name. The tithe may be The Winslow Boy, but at the heart of the film ts Catherine. Her quest for the equality of women parallels the family’s struggle to restore Ronnie’s honour. After her future father-in-law decides that the publicity of their case is caus- ing too much scandal, Catherine sacrifices what she believes is true love to con- tinue her young brorher’s fight. All highly passionate issues, but Pidgeon (also ur Mamet’s wife, seen in The Spanish Prisoner) shows too much restraint in her deliv- ery of the role. Catherine would be entirely believabie if che audience was allawed to see a crack or two in her emotional armour. Northam, on the other hand, is superb. He is self= promoting and manipulative yer we see moments Of awk- wardness, humour and barely contained jubilation. The Winslow Boy tells a small but historically impor- tant story. High-calibre act- ing and a realistic dose of suspense supersedes the need for over-the-top courtroom action, unnecessary romantic entanglements or tush, Merchant-Ivory type vistas. A refreshing break from the adrenalin flicks currently in theatres.
