Fight: months after the

Vancouver school district
introduced a mountain satety
program for all its Grade 9s,

Led by Cypress ski patrol
director Chris Frampton, the
collaborative effort: between
Cypress Mountain, — the
sehool district and the munic-
ipality aimed to ensure that
even if kids did go out of
bounds, they'd know how to
take care of themselves.

Geoffrey Ballard was the first-
ever recipient of an environ-
ment award given by the city
of Goteborg, Sweden,

The prize is awarded
jointy by othe city of
Géteborg and 10 companies

Ballard co-founded
Ballard Power Systems in
1979,

The campany has won the
support of major automobile
manufacturers keen to incor-
porate Ballard’s hydrogen
fuel cell technology into
future zero-emission vehicles.

Ballard launched
Vancouver-based = General
Hydrogen in 1999. Last year
Time magazine named him a
Hero for the Planet.

Ballard received a cheque
for the equivalent of
$104,000 US, which he
donated to Covenant House
in Vancouver to help street

Michael Caster, serving a life
sentence for che first-degree
murder of Mohammad Mishadi,
received a concurrent, 18 month
sentence atter being charged
with possession of an unregis-
tered handgun,

Caster was found gaily of

shooting, Mirhadi at close range
in a crowded North Vancouver
movie theatre in February, 1997.
The gun found by police under
the seat of Caster’s motorevele
which led to the new charge was
not the weapon used to kill
Mirhadi.

B Bus drivers victims of vio-
lence

In two separate incidents in
North Vancouver, transit drivers
were attacked by irate youth. At
Lonsdale Quay, two teens were
asked to make way for other pas-
sengers on an outbound bus.
One of them headbutted the bus
driver, A scuffle ensued on the
concourse,

On the same evening, ovo
teenagers assaulted a bus driver
near Phibbs Exchanye. After a
fare dispute, the driver was
dragged from his vehicle by the
boys, kicked, punched, and
pushed down into a ditch, He
sustained cuts and bruises.

The attacks brought renewed
calls from transit union members
for increased security measures at
bus loops and on board vehicles.

claimed to have lost any viable
use for its $100-million plot.
