Van City woman’s doorstep A TEENAGER who | threat- ened a witness testifying on the stand in North Vancouver provincial court was jailed two years less a day on April 20. By Anna Marie D'Angelo nicer neers een penser News Reporter Michael Austin Gavin, 19, of no fixed address in North Vancouver, mouthed the words “you are f---ing dead” and made a punching motion into his fist as he looked directly at a witness during court proceedings on March 3, The. witness, Noel Harder, was testifying in connection with charges Gavin would later be found guilty of. The charges included threaten- ing, robbing. and using a knife ‘to assault a man on Feb. 5, The man was threatened with a knife at his throat at a. party in "North Vancouver District, ‘accord- ing to a North Vancouver RCMP investigator. Gavin pleaded guilty to threat- ening Harder in connection with the open-court incident. A charge of attempting to obstruct justice was stayed (dropped). Gavin pleaded guilty to threat- ening @ woman whom he knew and killing a cat on Jan. 4 in North Vancouver City. The mutilated animal was left on the woman's doorstep after she was threatened by Gavin, according to police. Gavin also pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault (stabbing) and robbery of another man on March 12, 1994, The man was stabbed on West Kings Road in North Vancouver District. Judge Jerome Paradis said Gavin was violent and out of con- trol. But the judge said he had to take into account Gavin's drug use. “You have abused every. drug available, especially cocaine,” said Paradis. ~ Paradis decided to hand out a jail sentence which would be served in a provincial! jail instead of a federal correctional institution, Gavin also received two years’ probation. A list of 11 people he was not to have contact with during his proba- tion includes five women and six men. As Crown lawyer Vanda Spence read out the names of the “no go” people, Gavin stood by the prison- er’s exit door with his hands on his hips. Spence had asked for three to five years in jail as an appropriate sentence. Gavin's lawyer, Kevin Gillett, had asked for a jail sentence that would be served in a provincial prison (less than two years in jail). Gavin, tlond haired and sport- ing a moustache and goatee, had spent two months in jail awaiting his sentence. Meanwhile a North Vancouver RCMP investigator sad Gavin was a suspect in a number of violent incidents on the North Shore. The investigator said “a num- ber” of witnesses were afraid to fol- low through with their allegations against Gavin in the legal system. Mother India Take-Out .
