tion’s chairman as proof of Canfor’s new
commitment to environmental protection, but unless it
is backed up with some coucrete action, the appoint-
ment will do little to convince concerned Howe Sound
residents that that new-found commitment is genuine.
Company chairman Peter Bentley told shareholders
that former Canfor director of energy and environ-
ment Kirke MacMillan will henceforth be the corpora-
tion’s new vice-president cf environment.
But, while it acknowledges the latest concern for the
environment, the announcement does little to indicate
that the appointment is any more than a public rela-

tions move.

So much more than a shuffling of executive titles is
needed to halt the denigration of such local environ-

ments as Howe Sound.

Federal government tests have documented the
presence of pulp mill poisons in Howe Sound marie
life. Commercial fisheries have been closed, warnings
issued, aud plans for reduction of organochlorines
ordered from the government.

But mill discharges inte water and air continue.

If Canfor is serious about improving its en-
vironmental record, it should hire bona fide and ob-
jective environment specialists from outside the cor-
poration who are practised in the art of protecting en-
